Cinematic City Sapporo

Renowned in the West for being the birthplace of Japan’s most famous beer and its 4th largest city, Sapporo is located at the top of Japan on the northern island of Hokkaido. Also well known for hosting the 1972 Winter Olympics (from which several Sapporo event venues derive), it gets its fair share of cold weather.

In winter, Hokkaido is covered by a deep blanket of snow and the land lies dormant. But for the people who live in Japan’s northernmost main island, this season offers an opportunity for creativity and community spirit. Every year, they illuminate the midwinter landscape with spectacular displays of ice, snow, and light.

“Boys be ambitious!”  by Dr. Clark

A statue of Dr. Clark, famous for the phrase, “Boys be ambitious!” stands atop Sapporo Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill. The sight is recognized nationally for its panoramic views of downtown Sapporo and pastoral views of grazing sheep.
